About Us

As the name suggests, Rubbish to Rainbows is a blog about reducing waste, reusing what we can, often "upcycling" items left for the landfill into usable products that we either sell or use ourselves. We are both on a journey to financial freedom as well as sustainability, reducing our ecological and consumer footprint to make the world a better place for future generations.

Nina is the "Finder Extraordinaire" of our dynamic duo - she can spot a treasure in a pile of trash from a mile away. The very definition of unconventional, her lip piercing and tattoos are as much a part of her identity as her big brown eyes and raven black hair. Her love of plaid and brogues over dresses and heels proclaim her adherence to function over fluff, which is a valuable asset when pursuing a lifestyle of sustainability and minimalism. From childhood, she has exhibited  a deep affinity and appreciation for animals and nature, especially rainbows. Her favorite character is Tinkerbell, which is fitting since she found her very own "tinker" in her partner, A.J.

A.J. is the "tinker" of the duo - when it comes to power tools and building, she has yet to find a project she can't tackle (although she's sure there's plenty out there!). Her natural ability to find creative fixes for just about any problem has come in handy a lot in the past couple of years when she found herself a divorced mother of three and in desperate need to make her current resources stretch further than she ever thought possible. Unlike Nina, she has a major appreciation for heels, dresses, and trends - but she draws the line at wasting money on these things for vanity's sake, instead finding creative methods to bring functionality, frugality, and fabulousness together in unexpected ways.

Together, our seemingly opposite natures have proven to be a perfect match for a shared pursuit in sustainability and financial freedom. Join us on our journey!
